4 generations: Queen poses with Charles, William & George for birthday stamps

A new photo of The Queen has been released for her 90th birthday – featuring the next three generations of her family: Prince Charles, Prince William, and Prince George.

The photo was taken for Royal Mail for a set of four commemorative stamps to honour Elizabeth II’s milestone anniversary, which pop out of the photo to be used. Ronald Mackechnie was the photographer.

The scene takes place in the White Drawing Room at Buckingham Palace, and is the first image of four generations since Prince George’s christening in 2013. The Royals recreated the image of Queen Victoria and her descendants (Edward VII, future George V and future Edward VIII) at his christening in 1894.

How the stamp set looks – you pop the stamp out of the photo

Her Majesty, whose real birthday is on Thursday, sits on a golden upholstered sofa next to The Prince of Wales. Prince George stands atop some foam blocks – somewhat contrasting his grand surroundings – whilst he holds his William’s hand. It is all smiles for the Royal quartet.

Prince George of Cambridge is dressed in blue shorts and socks and a white shirt with blue trim, looking every inch the mischievous toddler with a beaming smile. The 2-year-old was reportedly ‘good as gold’ for the 25 minute shoot

No doubt the thought of their faces on stamps will be a strange one for Charles, William and George, since British stamps have born The Queen’s face for over 60 years. A further six stamps have been released to mark the occasion.

Fans can buy the set for the standard cost of four 1st class stamps – just over £2.50.
