BREAKING: Prince Henrik has passed away at Fredensborg Palace

Prince Henrik of Denmark has died, the Danish Royal Court announced earlier this morning.

The Danish Consort, who has been ill for a number of weeks, returned to Fredensborg Palace just yesterday, stating he wished to spend his last days at home.

French-born Henrik, aged 83, died ‘peacefully in his sleep’ last night at 11.18pm. Queen Margrethe and both her sons, Crown Prince Frederik and Prince Joachim were at Henrik’s bedside as he passed.

Henrik met Margrethe in 1965, and got to know one another better over the course of the next year, usually at social events. They became engaged in 1966 and married the following year.

Five years into their marriage, Margrethe succeeded to the throne and Henrik began his life as a working consort; though he has made comments in the past about the disrespect he felt from his wife at not being made ‘King Consort’.

Just last year, the Prince was diagnosed with dementia before he fell ill in Egypt and returned home to Denmark for more tests. A benign tumour was found in his lungs and he was treated for a lung infection, to which he seems to have succumbed yesterday.

We send our thoughts and best wishes to the Danish Royal Family at this difficult time.
