Duchess Camilla joins Tom Hiddleston at BBC Radio 2

Yesterday, Camilla, Duchess Cornwall joined actor Tom Hiddleston at the BBC Radio 2 studios as to judge the annual 500 Words competition, hosted by Chris Evans.

The Duchess, an avid supporter of literacy in children and adults alike, was joining a team of Malorie Blackman, Frank Cottrell Boyce, Francesca Simon and Charlie Higson to judge to children’s writing competition.

Chris Evans introduced Camilla to guests from the morning show, including Hiddleston, ‘Call The Midwife’ actress Helen George, ‘Game of Thrones’ actress Sophie Turner, and the pop band Dexy’s Midnight Runners.

The 500 Words competition asks children aged 13 and under to write a work of fiction in less than 500 words. This year the competition had 123,436 entries, which were cut down to 50 stories. The Gold, Silver and Bronze medal winners in the two age categories, 5-9 year olds and 10-13 year olds, will be announced when Evans broadcasts his show from the Shakespeare’s Globe theatre later this month.

The Duchess said she had been enthralled by BBC’s ‘The Night Manager’ starring Tom Hiddleston who played a British spy. Mr Evans introduced the 68-year-old to Hiddleston, saying: “Your Royal Highness, The Night Manager.”

The Duchess said: “Hello Night Manager, how are you? Sunday nights just aren’t the same without you.”

“Well I can only apologise unreservedly for that,” said Hiddleston

“But you might come back again ?” Camilla asked hopefully.

“Well you never know,” he replied. “We will have to ask John Le Carre [the writer].”

Speaking to Helen George, Prince Charles’ wife asked about her stint on Stricly Come Dancing.

“I know you from Strictly and Call The Midwife. I’ve followed your progress! Did you enjoy the dancing? It must have kept you quite fit?”

“I did enjoy it,” George replied. “Ainsley Harriott lost about two stone in the three weeks he was in it but it was really enjoyable and good fun.”

Camilla joked: “People are going to think I spend all my time watching the television! I don’t have time for anything else!”
