“The baby will be known as His Royal Highness Prince Louis of Cambridge.” This is pronounced ‘loo-ee’ and not ‘Lewis’.

Yesterday, Prince William said that the couple were ‘working on’ a name.

The name of the royal baby has been speculated about for months, even before the little Prince was born! We take a look at the history of some of these names.

The baby was born on Monday 23rd April at 11.01 am, weighing 8lb 7oz.

Louis

Louis was not top of the bookie’s predictions, likely because the name Louis is Prince George’s second middle name.

Louis has been included in a number of royal names including William’s third middle name.

It is the name of Prince Philip’s beloved uncle, Louis Mountbatten, 1st Earl of Burma; he was the brother of The Duke of Edinburgh’s mother, Princess Alice of Greece and Denmark. Her father, the new baby’s great-great-grandfather, was Prince Louis of Battenberg.

Louis was also name of this baby’s great-great-great-great-grandfather, Louis IV, Grand Duke of Hesse, who married Queen Victoria’s daughter Alice; they were Prince Philip’s grandparents.

Arthur

According to bookmakers, Arthur has been the leading favourite for the new royal baby boy.

Arthur is a middle name of William, Charles and George VI.

The most notable royal named Arthur was Queen Victoria’s seventh child, Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught and Strathearn. He is the great-grandfather of King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden, thus linking the British monarchy with Swedish monarchy.

Lady Sarah Chatto’s son, the Queen’s great-nephew, is named Arthur. Arthur Chatto is currently 23rd in line to the throne and is a student at the University of Edinburgh.

Charles

A lovely surprise for the Prince of Wales is to have his name included in his newest grandson’s title as second middle name. Charles has enjoyed being a grandfather since Prince George’s birth in July 2013.

On becoming a grandfather for the third time, Prince Charles joked: “It is a great joy to have another grandchild, the only trouble is I don’t know how I am going to keep up with them!”

Prince William’s daughter, Prince Charlotte, has the middle name Diana in honour of his mother Diana, Princess of Wales; it is therefore a likely chance he would honour his father in the same way.
