Good luck message for Team GB at Rio 2016 sent by William, Kate & Harry

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry have sent a video message to the British Olympic team ahead of the 2016 competition in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, giving our athletes their best wishes and good luck.

Released earlier today, the Royal trio’s video takes a look back at the success Team GB had at the London 2012 Olympic Games, as our team topped the table for the number of gold medals won, with 47 first place competitions.

Rio 2016 will see 366 British athletes compete across 23 sports. as Team GB look to better the 47 medals won at Beijing 2008 and make Rio Great Britain’s best-ever away Games.

With rousing footage from the 2012 games, William, Catherine and Harry take turns to recount the story of Team GB’s success, before calling for the upcoming meets to be the best ever away-games for our athletes.

Prince William, Duke of Cambridge: “London 2012 saw this country come alive with a passion for sport. It saw people of all ages, and from all walks of life, join together to support Team GB.”

Prince Harry: “Each member of Team GB will have a unique journey, but they all share the same aim – to deliver the best performance they possibly can.”

Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge: “London 2012 showcased the best of British sport, and we are all so excited to see what can be achieved in Rio.”

William and Catherine were filmed recently when they visited Portsmouth, to see Ben Ainslie’s team take the lead at the Americas Cup, while Prince Harry appears to be in Kensington Palace’s gardens.

The message also features footage of the trio attending various events during London 2012, as they cheered on Team GB.

Mo Farah, Jessica Ennis-Hill, Tom Daley, Beth Tweddle and Greg Rutherford all appear as they compete, interspersed with the beautiful scenery of Rio.

“Our athletes are an inspiration to us all, and we need the whole country to get behind them and cheer them on as they take to the world stage,” Harry continues.

“We have some of the most passionate supporters in the world,” says William, “and we can’t wait to cheer on our athletes together this time around in Rio.”

Kate: “We can’t wait to watch everyone compete. Good luck!”

It was at the London Olympics that The Queen joined James Bond ‘parachuting’ into the opening ceremony; the dress she wore – a peach ensemble – is currently on display at Buckingham Palace, alongside many other outfits worn by Her Majesty over her 90 years.

Princess Anne is a member of The International Olympic Committee, and is currently in Rio for the games. No other member of the Royal Family will be attending.
