Today, Princess Madeleine of Sweden announced that she is pregnant, expecting her third child with husband, Chris O’Neill.
The couple, who already have two children, shared the news through a palace press release, before it was also confirmed on Madeleine’s official Facebook page.
Already parents to Leonor (3) and Nicolas (2), Chris and Madeleine have not hidden their desire for a big family: last year, Chris told Expressen, a Swedish newspaper, that “both of us want a big family.”
According to the press release, the baby is due in March 2018, meaning a seventh grandchild for King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia. The palace also said that Madeleine is ‘feeling well’.
On her official Facebook page, Madeleine said, “Chris and I are thrilled to announce that I am expecting. We look forward to four becoming five!” It has received more than 29,000 likes.
Madeleine is now sixth-in-line to the throne, behind her elder siblings Victoria and Carl Phillip, as well as their respective children. However, Chris does not have a royal title as he preferred to retain his British and American citizenship and continue working; as he is not a Swedish citizen, he is not an official member of the Swedish Royal Family.
The family is currently based in London, although Leonor has just started preschool in Sweden. A press officer for the family acknowledged that while the family’s permanent residence is in the UK, Madeleine is keen for her children to feel just as home in Sweden as she does.
Madeleine is not the only expectant Swedish Royal – Princess Sofia, wife of Carl Philip, is due to give birth in September. While the palace haven’t confirmed Sofia’s due date, she has already begun her maternity leave from royal duties. This is obviously a happy time for the Swedish monarchy, as the family continues to grow.
