The origins of the annual event date back to 1898 when it was initially known as Empire Day. It was first celebrated on 24th May, which coincided with the birthday of Queen Victoria, as a way to honour the British Empire.

However in 1958, the event was renamed Commonwealth Day to reflect the transition from empire to a voluntary association of independent nations.

The annual day is meant to celebrate the unity and shared values of the Commonwealth nations, which span across Africa, Asia, South America, Europe, and the Pacific. The Commonwealth upholds principles such as democracy, peace, and sustainable development.

Every year, the Commonwealth set a theme to help develop events to mark the day and helps to guide activities by organisations throughout the year.

While the annual day is not a public holiday in most member countries, it is marked with various activities and events, including:

– The Commonwealth Service: Held at Westminster Abbey in London, this service is attended by representatives from member nations, dignitaries, and the Royal Family. The event includes prayers, readings, and musical performances that highlight the diversity of the 56 countries.

– Message from the Head of the Commonwealth: King Charles, who is Head of the Commonwealth, delivers a special message that is broadcast across all member states. Read Charles’s first message from the 2023 service here.

– Educational Programs: Schools and institutions hold discussions, debates, and cultural events to educate students about the significance of the Commonwealth and its global role.

– Community Activities: Some countries organise parades, flag-raising ceremonies, and cultural exhibitions to highlight their connection to the other nations.
