New ITV drama, 'Majesty', to focus on young Elizabeth I • The Crown Chronicles

ITV have commissioned a new Tudor period drama, 'Majesty', which will depict the life of a young Elizabeth I in the court of Henry VIII. Elizabeth I , who reigned from 1558 until her death in 1603, was the final monarch of the Tudor dynasty. She was the only surviving child of Henry VIII and his second wife, Anne Boleyn. The network teased the premise with provocative questions: 'Was the Virgin Queen hiding a profound secret? And how did this overlooked, embattled princess become the most powerful ruler England has ever known?' The series is the brainchild of former Grey’s Anatomy showrunners Joan Rater, Tony Phelan, and William Harper. The creative team described Majesty as 'an emotional, funny, and contemporary-feeling alternate history about how three outsiders try to stay alive while hiding a secret that, if discovered, would rock England to its foundations. This show allows us to have fun with history while illuminating who we are today. It’s pure wish-fulfillment, imagining how people devoted to the public good could find themselves in a position to make a difference'.

The brilliant scripts are a director’s dream, giving us the chance to reimagine an iconic piece of English history. This will be a period drama that looks stunning but feels modern and relevant for today’s viewers'.

Filming for Majesty is scheduled to begin in 2025, with casting details to be revealed closer to production. The series will air on ITV1 and STV, with streaming available on ITV X and STV Player.
