Her Royal Highness The Princess of Wales, Sponsor of HMS Glasgow, today gave her blessing to the Royal Navy’s newest warship.

Smashing a bottle of whisky against the hull for good luck, Her Royal Highness formally named HMS Glasgow, the first of eight Type 26 frigates at the leading edge of naval warfare.

To cheers from hundreds of friends, family, workers, VIP guests and the 45-strong ship’s company at BAE Systems shipbuilding facility in Scotstoun, The Duchess of Rothesay, as she is known in Scotland, declared the time-honoured words: “I name this ship Glasgow. May God bless her and all who serve in her.”

The Princess of Wales’ jewellery collection features a number of family heirlooms that were once part of Diana, Princess of Wales‘ iconic collection. Among these cherished pieces are the sapphire and diamond earrings.

The earrings feature two cabochon sapphire drops surrounded by a halo of diamonds. The top sapphire is encircled by eight brilliant-cut diamonds, while the lower sapphire is framed by nine; a single round diamond elegantly links the two clusters.

As a wedding present, the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia gave the late Princess a suite of jewellery, which consisted of a necklace, watch, earrings, bracelet and ring. Diana used the stones from these two pieces to make new ones. This includes four of the sapphire and diamond clusters from the watch strap being used to create a pair of earrings, with two clusters as detachable pendant drops.

Diana first started wearing the earrings during the mid-1980s and was frequently seen wearing them in the years that followed. She was notably seen wearing these pieces during a trip to Canada in 1991, on the cover of British Vogue in 1994, and at the Met Gala in 1996.

Catherine first publicly donned her mother-in-law’s earrings at Trooping the Colour parade in 2022, marking their return to the public eye after decades. Recently, sightings of the earrings on Catherine include her visit to Boston in 2022 for The Earthshot Prize and her visit to the naming ceremony of HMS Glasgow in May 2025, where she had a new brooch as godmother of the ship.
