In a cabinet meeting this morning, King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden announced his newest grandson’s name on behalf of Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia: Gabriel.
The couple welcomed their newest arrival on Friday morning, weighing 7lb 5oz and measuring 49 cm long. The family stayed in the Stockholm hospital overnight, leaving with their newborn on Saturday.
In the press conference a few hours after the birth, Carl Philip explained they had already picked a name but would be waiting until today to reveal it.
Prince Gabriel Carl Walter – his full name – was given the Dukedom of Dalarna, as is tradition in Sweden.
“It’s hard to find a good name, you do not know if the name fits with the person,” said Carl Philip, who is already father to Prince Alexander Erik Hubertus Bertil, 1.
Carl is a tribute to both the newborn’s grandfather, the King, and Walther was Prince Carl Philip’s grandfather.
