Buckingham Palace has announced The King will be returning to public-facing duties ‘after a period of treatment and recuperation’ following his recent cancer diagnosis, releasing a new photo to mark the occasion.
His Majesty was diagnosed with cancer earlier this year, after treatment at a London hospital for an enlarged prostate saw further tests undertaken.
The Palace have said that to mark this important moment in his recovery, Charles and Camilla will undertake a joint visit to a cancer treatment centre next Tuesday, where they will meet medical specialists and patients. This will be the first of a number engagements carried out by The King.
Palace aides are said to be continuing planning for The King’s attendance at a number of events this summer including Trooping the Colour, and the D-Day commemorations but that ‘nothing can be confirmed or guaranteed at this stage’.
Last month, King Charles made a rare public appearance by leading the Royal Family in attendance to this year’s Easter Matins service at St George’s Chapel.
The last few months have seen members of the Royal Family step up to represent The King at official engagements, such as Queen Camilla representing His Majesty at this year’s Royal Maundy service at Worcester Cathedral and The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh attending a parade at Buckingham Palace to commemorate the 120th anniversary of the Entente Cordiale.
Another big event has been announced: The King and Queen will host The Emperor and Empress of Japan for a State Visit in June, at the request of the Government. Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako of Japan were supposed to visit the UK in 2020, but their visit was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
This will be the first incoming State Visit of 2024 and the third State Visit of Charles III’s reign.
As the first anniversary of The Coronation approaches, Buckingham Palace have said that ‘Their Majesties remain deeply grateful for the many kindnesses and good wishes they have received from around the world throughout the joys and challenges of the past year’.
Accompanying the message, a new photograph of King Charles and Queen Camilla was released to mark the first anniversary of the Coronation. The photograph was taken the day after their 19th wedding anniversary at Buckingham Palace, and was captured by Millie Pilkington.
