Today, The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Countess of Wessex and Zara Tindall attended the quarter-finals at Wimbledon, to see Andy Murray take on Vasek Pospisil.
William and Catherine were warmly applauded by the spectators as they took their seats, just days after christening their two-month-old daughter, Princess Charlotte. They were greeted at the door, just as players are, by Philip Brook, Chairman of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club (Wimbledon’s official name).
Sophie was seated next to her nephew, who yesterday commemorated 10 years since the 7/7 bombings; she was also joined by Prince Albert of Monaco, as well as the Monegasque ambassador in the Royal Box, to see the UK number one take on the Canadian player on Centre Court.
Zara Tindall and husband Mike also attended the match on the 9th day of the world-famous tennis championship, in a low-key entrance, ike Prince and Princess Michael of Kent, with all eyes on the Duke and Duchess.
Tennis is a popular sport within the Royal Family: both William and Catherine are keen fans, having attended matches these past few years. Sophie is also a regular at Wimbledon (though the Earl is more of a Real Tennis fan), as well as The Duchess of Cornwall, and Prince and Princess Michael of Kent.
The Duke of Kent is patron of the club, and hands out trophies each year, making him a regular match-goer.
The races and sporting events are guaranteed to be the only times in the year you see a Royal become animated – and the clash today didn’t disappoint, with a number of grimaces and faces being pulled throughout the match.
David Beckham, Paula Radcliffe and Bear Grylls were also in attendance, Grylls having worked with Catherine in her support of the Scouts.
Murray won against the Canadian opponent, seeing him through to the semis; he won all three sets, despite some difficult moments. He will play Roger Federer, world number two, in the next round.
Murray said in an interview after his win, that he would ‘love’ for the Duke and Duchess to be at his next match as it ‘draws interest’ to the sport.
