Kate gave her first TV interview for ‘Our Queen At Ninety’, a historic two-hour ITV documentary which will be broadcast on Sunday 27th March. She is one of 11 of Royals – including William, Harry, Eugenie and Camilla – to speak about the Monarch for the programme to celebrate her birthday.

The Duchess reveals that two-year-old Prince George hss something of a nickname for his great-grandmother, The Queen: “He calls her Gan-Gan.”

Family has always been important to Her Majesty and Catherine speaks of her special ways to show her family she cares, particularly to the youngsters, George and Charlotte.

“She always leaves a little gift or something in their room when we stay. And that just shows, I think, her love for her family.”

Her Majesty was also pleased to have another great-granddaughter, Kate revealed, in addition to Isla and Savannah, her grandchildren from Peter and Autumn Phillips, and Mia Tindall, Zara’s daughter born in 2014.

“It’s very special having a new little girl,” Kate said of her Princess, now 10-months-old. “I feel very, very lucky that George has got a little sister.”

“The Queen was really thrilled that it was a little girl and I think as soon as we came back here, to Kensington, she was one of our first visitors.”

Her Majesty was seen arriving at Kensington Palace the day after Charlotte’s birth last May; the newest Cambridge also bears her name, Elizabeth, and that of Diana, Princess of Wales.

Kate also bought The Queen chutney for her first Royal Christmas.

The Queen is praised by the Duchess, who says ‘there is a real art to walkabouts’, something Her Majesty has perfected during her six decades on the throne.

“Everyone teases me in the family that I spend far too long chatting,” Catherine said. “So I’ve still got to learn a little bit more – and pick up a few more tips.”

The Duchess explained how The Queen has helped her adjust to Royal life since her marriage in 2011. “She’s been very generous. I feel she’s been a gentle guidance really for me.”

One particular engagement reminds Catherine of Her Majesty’s support: 8th March 2012, when Kate supported The Queen on the first day of her Diamond Jubilee tour of the United Kingdom. Prince William was in the Falklands on tour with the RAF, and she was invited to join her and Prince Philip in the East Midlands.

“The most memorable engagement for me, I suppose, was an away-day to Leicester. I went without William so I was rather apprehensive about that.”

The Queen was ‘very suportive’ of her role in the important day, even though it was a ‘very small element’, Kate said.

“The fact she took the time to make sure that I was happy – and looked after me – shows just how caring she is.”

Watch ‘Our Queen at 90’ on ITV on Sunday at 8pm.
