Design and Features of Queen Camilla’s cypher
The cypher consists of the Queen’s monogram, accompanied by a representation of the Crown. The monogram, “CR,” combines Her Majesty’s initial, “C” for Camilla, with “R” for Regina—the Latin word for “Queen.” This design aligns with the tradition of British royal cyphers, which often blend the monarch’s initials with symbolic elements such as the Crown.
The cypher is Queen Camilla’s personal property and will be featured on her official letterheads, personal correspondence, cards, and gifts. It represents a visual emblem of her identity as Queen Consort and serves a practical purpose in distinguishing her communications and items.
The Queen’s cypher was first introduced in November 2022 during the annual Field of Remembrance service. On that occasion, the cypher could be seen on the cross she laid.

The cypher was crafted by Professor Ewan Clayton, a renowned calligrapher associated with the Faculty and Academic Board of The Royal Drawing School. He collaborated with Timothy Noad, the Herald Painter and Scrivener of The College of Arms, to produce a design that balances tradition with modern elegance. Both are highly respected for their expertise in creating regal and heraldic designs.
The design mirrors elements of Charles III’s cypher, unveiled in September 2022, maintaining continuity between the King and Queen Consort’s identities. King Charles’s cypher also features the initial “C” intertwined with “R” for Rex (Latin for King) and incorporates “III” within the letter “R” to represent his place as the third King Charles in British royal history. Rendered in gold, the King’s cypher emphasises regality and historical significance.

The creation of Queen Camilla’s cypher adds another chapter to the rich history of royal symbols in the United Kingdom. It will stand as a distinctive and personal mark for the Queen Consort, ensuring her legacy is enshrined alongside other members of the Royal Family. As the cypher becomes more visible in the coming years, it will serve as a reminder of her integral role in supporting King Charles III and their joint contributions to the monarchy.
