It has been announced the funeral of The Duchess of Kent will take place at Westminster Cathedral on Tuesday 16th September at 2:00 pm, becoming the first Royal funeral to be held at the Cathedral since its construction in 1903. It will also be the first Royal Catholic funeral in modern history.
The Duchess died on 4th September at Kensington Palace surrounded by her family.
Prior to the funeral, the Duchess’s coffin will rest in the private chapel at Kensington Palace, allowing the family a time of reflection and prayer. On 15th September, the coffin will be taken by hearse to Westminster Cathedral, where the Rite of Reception and Vespers will be observed.
Following this service, the coffin will rest overnight in the Cathedral’s Lady Chapel.
On the day of the funeral (16th), The King and Queen, alongside members of the Royal Family, will join The Duke of Kent and members of the Duchess’s family at the solemn Requiem Mass.
The service will be attended by dignitaries and members of the public who wish to pay their respects to the Duchess.
Following the Requiem Mass, the Duchess’s coffin will travel by hearse to the Royal Burial Ground at Frogmore, Windsor, where she will be laid to rest in a private committal service.
In a mark of respect, flags will be flown at half-mast on all official Royal Residences flying the Union flag on the day of the funeral.
