This evening, Prince Harry has joined around 1,500 firefighters from across London to attend the London Fire Brigade’s annual Christmas carol service at Westminster Cathedral.
The newly-engaged Prince braved the cold weather without a coat, instead opting for a simple grey suit, and grey tie.
Upon his arrival, Harry was greeted by London Fire Brigade Commissioner Dany Cotton, who was dressed in full ceremonial uniform. Before the carol service started, Prince Harry was seen gazing around the church, taking in his surroundings and the traditional architecture of the 114-year-old catholic cathedral.
The cornerstone of Westminster Cathedral was laid in 1895, with the building being completed in 1903. The grand interior of the Cathedral, which Prince Harry took time to admire, though incomplete, contains fine marble-work, mosaics and the world renowned fourteen Stations of the Cross, by the sculptor Eric Gill.

The annual event featured festive readings and Christmas carols for uniformed and non-uniformed staff, and their families. The event was also attended by the brigade’s retired firefighters, with the Prince seated in the front row of the cathedral for the service.
The visit comes exactly one week after the announcement that Prince Harry is engaged to Ms Meghan Markle, and just days after the couple made their first joint visit to Nottingham. This year’s big royal news could not go without mention during the service, as the Reverend Mia Hilborn said: “We pray for the Royal Family and for the newly engaged Harry and Meghan and the joy they have brought to the country. We pray that you will bless their upcoming union and that you will bless all couples.”

After the service, 33-year-old Prince Harry met with responders to the Grenfell Tower fire, a tragedy that took the lives of 71 people and a baby. He also met with other firefighters and the brigade’s young cadets.
The Royals have been keen to support those affected by the fire, with private donations being made by William, Catherine and Harry, the brothers’ recent visit to the victims who were being assisted by the Royal Foundation, Prince Charles’ thanks to the British Red Cross and Her Majesty’s visit with her grandson shortly after the tragedy to see how the affected were being helped.
The former army captain signed the visitor’s book before leaving the service.
This is one of many festive carol events that members of the Royal Family will attend this season, often for their patronages.
