Queen sends condolences to Australia during wildfires as Sussexes share sadness on Instagram

The Queen has sent a message of condolence to the people of Australia, as the country continues to battle wildfires in extreme heat. Meanwhile, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have expressed their sadness at the destruction caused by the fires and its impact on the environment.

The Queen – who is also Monarch in Australia – sent her condolences following the devastating fires in Australia.

Her Majesty sent the message to the Governor General of Australia, Governor of New South Wales, Governor of Queensland, and Governor of Victoria and to all Australians. She is, of course, head of state in Australia, too.

“I have been deeply saddened to hear of the continued bushfires and their devastating impact across many parts of Australia.

The Queen’s message to Australia

“My thanks go out to the emergency services, and those who put their own lives in danger to help communities in need.

“Prince Philip and I send our thoughts and prayers to all Australians at this difficult time.”

Prince Harry and Meghan, who are currently spending time in Canada, shared a post to Instagram to tell of their worry for the nation.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with those across Australia who are continuing to face the devastating fires that have been raging for months.

From areas we are personally connected to such as the communities and people we visited in New South Wales in 2018, to the fires in California and parts of Africa, we are struck by the increasingly overlapping presence of these environmental disasters, including of course the destruction of the Amazon which continues.

This global environmental crisis has now been described as Ecocide. It’s easy to feel helpless, but there’s always a way to help.”

The text was accompanied by three images, of a koala being held by a firefighter, a fire tornado and people sitting on the beach, some wearing masks to protect them from the smoke. The post also shared links of organisations accepting donations to fund their work assisting the people and wildlife affected by the fires.
