Tell me about…Bagshot Park

The main residence of Prince Edward and Sophie

Nestled in the picturesque countryside of Surrey, Bagshot Park is a grand royal residence with a rich history dating back to the 17th century.

Known for its striking red-brick architecture and sprawling estate, the property is best known today as the official residence of The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh.

The origins of Bagshot Park can be traced back to the late 1600s when Charles I commissioned the construction of hunting lodges in the area. The estate, situated near to Windsor Castle and is located within Windsor Great Park, served as a retreat for Royals seeking refuge from the bustle of London.

Over the centuries, the property evolved through several renovations and expansions, with the present mansion being largely rebuilt in the late 19th century for Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught (Queen Victoria’s third son) and his wife, Princess Louise Margaret.

Designed by architect Benjamin Ferrey, the current structure was completed in 1879, and is a Grade II-listed building, featuring a Jacobean Revival style with red-brick facades, grand chimneys, and ornate gables – that is to say, mimicking the 17th century style but 200 years later.

The mansion originally had over 120 rooms, though it has since been modified to suit modern royal living, and a smaller household.

The estate covers 51 acres of private grounds, with beautifully landscaped gardens, stables, and woodland. Its secluded location makes it one of the most private royal residences in the UK, unlike Sandringham, which is also open to the public.

Bagshot Park has long been associated with British royalty, with the Duke of Connaught residing here until his death in 1942. After the Duke of Connaught died, Bagshot Park was then used by the Army as the Staff College of the Auxiliary Territorial Service, that Princess Elizabeth herself was a part.

After the Second World War, Army Chaplains occupied Bagshot Park until 1996.

Edward and Sophie moved into Bagshot Park following their wedding in 1999, leasing it for 100 years, and have since made it their family home, where they live with their two children: Lady Louise and James, Earl of Wessex. The estate remains privately leased from the Crown Estate, with ongoing speculation about its future once the lease expires.

Full interior details of this royal residence remain undisclosed. Occasional photos of Prince Edward and Sophie inside their home show neutral-toned decor, large bookcases, and classic furniture, but we do know there is an Indian-themed room, with carved wood panelling and even a but of Queen Victoria.
