Charles, Camilla and William host holders of the Victoria Cross and George Cross

The special reception took place at Windsor Castle

Windsor Castle served as a fitting backdrop for a poignant and prestigious evening as The King and Queen and The Prince of Wales hosted a reception for recipients of the Victoria Cross and George Cross.

The reception marked the first Victoria Cross and George Cross Association event at Windsor Castle since 2006, and the first under King Charles’ patronage, a role he inherited from his late mother, Elizabeth II.

The Victoria Cross is the highest military decoration awarded for valour ‘in the face of the enemy’ to members of the armed forces. Whilst, the George Cross is the highest civil decoration and is awarded to those who have displayed the greatest heroism or the most conspicuous courage whilst in extreme danger.

Among the distinguished guests was Major Peter Norton, GC, who was awarded the George Cross in 2006 for his courageous actions while checking for an improvised explosive device (IED) near Baghdad, Iraq, in 2005. The blast resulted in the loss of his left leg and severe injuries to his right leg, abdomen, back, and left arm, yet Major Norton continued to lead his team, ensuring their safety before seeking help for himself.

Speaking with Prince William, the 62-year-old joked that he is “spread across three countries” due to his extensive injuries, a moment that reflected both humility and humour. William, moved, responded: “I’m in awe.”

Despite his life-altering wounds, Major Norton expressed no resentment, telling reporters: “I hold no bitterness, it is what it is.” He noted that advancements in medical technology might have led to a different outcome if the incident had occurred just a few years later.

Prince William, who now serves as President of the VC and GC Association, described it as an honour to meet such individuals. He follows in the footsteps of his father, King Charles, and great-grandmother, the Queen Mother, who both held the role before him.

The VC and GC Association, established to support recipients and preserve the legacy of their actions, has long enjoyed a close relationship with the Royal Family. King Charles became Patron of the Association upon ascending the throne in 2022, having previously served as President from 2003. His mother, Queen Elizabeth II, hosted receptions every four years – a tradition this event continues.
