The name of Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel’s newborn son was announced earlier today: Prince Oscar.
His full name is Oscar Carl Olof, Duke of Skåne, which is Sweden’s most southerly region. King Carl XVI Gustaf met with the Cabinet earlier this morning to announce his grandson’s name and title; Swedish Royals are given their title and Duchy shortly after birth.
The Prince was born yesterday at 8.28 pm, weighing around 8lb (3.65kg). His sister, Estelle, was informed of his arrival this morning, as she was asleep.
The King also paid tribute to his brother-in-law, Prince Johann Georg of Hohenzollern, who passed away yesterday morning, a few hours before Oscar was born. “Life is wondrous and in some peculiar way it goes on, that is what is so amazing,” he said.
The family returned to their home, Haga Palce, after leaving the hospital this morning, and releasing an official photo.
A 21-gun salute was fired from the Skeppsholmen island in Stockholm, Boden, Härnösand, Karlskrona and Gothenburg at 12pm to mark the birth, and the Royal Family, minus Victoria and the newborn, attended a Te Deum service at the Royal Chapel.
“Everything’s gone very well, it happened quickly,” Prince Daniel said yesterday to the press, also praising women for their . “You women are a primal force. (…) He looks like his mother, which is pleasing.”
Prince Oscar is third in line to the throne, behind his older sister, Princess Estelle.
