The Duke of Cambridge has launched a prestigious prize to encourage the world’s best thinkers to help solve the climate emergency.
“The earth is at a tipping point,” a post from @KensingtonRoyal says alongside a new photo of Prince William, and a video narrated by Sir David Attenborough. “We face a stark choice: either we continue as we are and irreparably damage our planet or we remember our unique power as human beings and our continual ability to lead, innovate and problem-solve.”
The video shows us images of the beauty of nature, then contrasted with images of plastic in the ocean and in animals’ stomachs, rising water levels including the recent flooding in Venice, and congested roads with engines pumping out particulates.
The 93-year-old naturalist, Attenborough, has worked alongside The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge previously, including the launch of Blue Planet II, the launch of the Natural History Museum and Hope the whale, being interviewed by William at Davos, and even launching the scientific research ship with the Cambridges in September.

The new photo that accompanied the video was taken by William’s wife, The Duchess of Cambridge during the couple’s recent visit to Pakistan.
Earthshot is “an ambitious set of challenges to inspire a decade of action to repair the planet” and named following the moon landings, which was a decade-long plan called Moonshot.
Famous faces also appear, including Marie Curie, Albert Einstein, the Suffragettes, and Rosa Parks.
“Remember the awe inspiring civilisations that we have built, the life-saving technology we have created, the fact that we have put a man on the moon,” the post reads. “People can achieve great things. And the next ten years present us with one of our greatest tests – a decade of action to repair the Earth.”
