On International Day of People with Disabilities, The Duchess of Edinburgh has become the new Royal Patron of Capability Scotland, a Scottish charity who champion the rights of disabled people since 1946.
Sophie takes over the Patronage from her late father-in-law, Prince Philip, who passed away in 2021 and supported Capability Scotland for over six decades.
Capability Scotland stated that the Duchess’ appointment has come at a ‘significant moment’ for the charity as the charity approaches their 80th anniversary in 2026.
The Duchess of Edinburgh has supported the charity over the years, conducting visits and highlighting the work of the charity in fostering inclusivity and helping individuals live independently.
During a visit to the charity’s Craigmillar base earlier this year, The Duchess of Edinburgh met and spoke to service users and staff, toured the sensory and art spaces, and even received a heartfelt gift created by those supported at the hub.
As the Patron of Capability Scotland, Sophie will continue support the charity’s mission, including attending events for the organisation’s 80th anniversary. As with any charity-based patronage, Her Royal Highness will also recognising and celebrating the efforts of the staff and volunteers who work for the charity.
Capability Scotland’s Chief Executive, Brian Logan, spoke about the news that Sophie would be taking over the Patronage: ‘We are incredibly honoured to welcome The Duchess of Edinburgh as our new Royal Patron. Her passion for championing the rights of disabled people and her connection to our cause is inspiring.
The Duchess has already shown great interest in our work through her visits, engaging with the people we support and learning about the wide range of services we provide’
🎂For the last 75 years, @CapabilityScot has been providing care, support, and education for disabled children and adults across Scotland.

He added: ‘Her involvement will undoubtedly help us shine a spotlight on the challenges faced by disabled people in Scotland, while also celebrating their achievements.
This appointment continues a remarkable legacy of royal support for Capability Scotland, which began with the late Duke of Edinburgh more than six decades ago. Her Royal Highness’s patronage is a testament to the importance of our mission, and we look forward to working together to create a more inclusive and equitable society for disabled people.’
