The Duchess of Cambridge goes “Back to Nature” with her family – new photos

The Duchess of Cambridge recently previewed her garden installation to perhaps her most discerning audience – her husband and children.

Two days ahead of the official opening of the Chelsea Flower Show, the Cambridge family took time to explore the various features of the garden, which includes a den, a stream, a treehouse, and a swing. Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis clearly enjoyed their visit as shown in images released by Kensington Palace. Matt Porteous, who has photographed the family previously, captured their delight.

In one video Prince William asks George to rate the garden on a scale of 1 to 10. George exclaims, “20!” William then has a go on the swing himself after asking for a push.

George and Charlotte waste no time removing their shoes and settling in to play. They both enjoyed the swing, although Louis appeared anxious even with William’s steady hand on his back. George scrambled over rocks and dangled his feet off a wooden walkway alongside his sister.

Kate hopes her design will encourage families to spend time together outside exploring all that nature has to offer. The garden complements the Duchess’s expanding work on children’s issues. “I really feel that nature and being interactive outdoors has huge benefits on our physical and mental wellbeing, particularly for young children,” the Duchess has said.

Although this is the Duchess’s first installation at the show, the Royal Family has an enduring relationship with this event. The Prince of Wales hosted an installation in 2002, and The Duke of Sussex has shown twice, in 2013 and 2015, both times on behalf of Sentebale, a charitable organisation of which he is founder and patron. Additionally The Queen and other members of the family attend each year without fail.

The Royal Horticultural Society hosts a number of garden shows from April through September across Britain each year and supports an initiative called The RHS Campaign for School Gardening. Its goal is to use gardening as a tool for children to boost their skills and self-esteem.

The woodland was designed in collaboration with landscape architects Andree Davis and Adam White and is on view from 25th May.
