The Queen and Prince Charles plant tree to mark Platinum Jubilee

The Queen and her heir, The Duke of Rothesay came together for a joint engagement today as they marked the start of The Queen’s Green Canopy by planting a tree at Balmoral.

The Queen’s Green Canopy initiative aims to help mark the Platinum Jubilee next year, by planting a number of trees in Her Majesty’s name. Queen Elizabeth II will become the first British monarch to achieve the milestone since taking to the throne in 1952.

Taking a hands-on approach, Her Majesty and her eldest son took a pair of spades to the ground as they planted a copper beech tree at the Balmoral estate’s cricket pavilion.

The Queen wore a khaki green overcoat and a leaf-print scarf for the outing. As they filled in soil at the base of the tree, Prince Charles joked: “Let’s hope it will survive.”

The tree planted today will join around 1,500 The Queen has planted around the world throughout her seven-decade reign, according to The Queen’s Green Canopy.

While on the grounds of the Scottish estate, Crathie Primary School pupils explored Balmoral’s woods, taking part in nature projects as part of the scheme. They also presented the Monarch with a card they had made for her, featuring hand drawn illustrations of trees. The Queen looked thrilled as she received it, and said the gesture was ‘very kind’.

The initiative is calling on people across the nation, and plant their own trees, using the slogan: ‘Plant a tree for the jubilee.’ It encourages people to plants their trees between October and March, to give them the best chance of survival.

The planting of the tree today also marked the unveiling of the QGC’s education programme, which includes a special Jubilee edition of the RFS Junior Forester Award.

The award will aim to give children and young people of all ages an insight into the skills needed for a career in forestry, as well as equipping them with the practical ability to assist in woodland management in their schools and local communities.

An official photograph with The Queen, Prince and schoolchildren will now be added to the QGC’s interactive map, which will create a digital record of the green canopy of tree planting projects across the country.

The first ‘pin’ on the map is a Verdun Oak planted by The Queen and The Prince of Wales in the grounds of Windsor Great Park earlier this year.

2022 will be a year of celebrations to mark The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee with a four-day Bank Holiday weekend from 2nd to 5th June. Celebration across the special weekend will include Trooping the Colour, the lighting of beacons, a Service of Thanksgiving, Platinum Pageant and a concert making The Queen’s historic reign.
