Season 5 of The Crown dedicates episode to Diana’s interview with Martin Bashir

Netflix’s ‘The Crown’ is set to feature an entire episode featuring Diana’s famous interview with Martin Bashir on BBC’s Panorama, it has been said.

According to The Sun, an insider on the hit-Netflix drama said: “To the writers, the stormy marriage between Charles and Di led up to her outpouring on Panorama, and the aftermath of that decision defined her final months.

“They are making a huge investment in that. ‘The Crown’ has a track record of delving into areas of the Royal Family’s history they’d rather be left alone.”

Netflix have not issued a comment regarding the potential plot details but have not denied the report.

The controversy surrounding the interview with Bashir came into spotlight earlier this year when an independent investigation found that Bashir had engaged in ‘deceitful behaviour’ by commissioning fake bank statements to land the now-historic interview, which was a ‘serious breach’ of the BBC’s guidelines.

Speaking at the time regarding the inquiry, Prince William said the programme should never be aired again: “In an era of fake news, public service broadcasting and a free press have never been more important.”

The father of three also commented on the ‘deceitful way’ in which the interview was obtained had substantially influenced what his mother had said and ‘contributed significantly’ to her state of mind in the final years of her life.

The Duke of Sussex also released a statement focusing on ‘the ripple effect of a culture of exploitation and unethical practices ultimately took her life.’

The upcoming season of The Crown was supposed to be its last, but the show’s creator extended to include a sixth season.

Having played The Queen for the past two seasons, Oscar-winner Olivia Colman is handing the role over Imelda Staunton. Dominic West is taking over from Josh O’Connor and will play Prince Charles, whilst Elizabeth Debicki will play the Princess of Wales.
