Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, has been added to the short list for an LGBT ‘Straight ally’ award, following his appearance on Attitude magazine last year.
The British LGBT Awards for 2017 has added the Prince to the list for his support of the LGBTQ+ community, with the comments of support he gave in his interview with Attitude. He is the first ever Royal to have appeared on a gay magazine.
“No one should be bullied for their sexuality or any other reason and no one should have to put up with the kind of hate that these young people have endured in their lives,” the Duke said. He spoke with those who suffered from mental health issues and had attempted suicide because of such bullying.
“What I would say to any young person reading this who’s being bullied for their sexuality: don’t put up with it – speak to a trusted adult, a friend, a teacher, Childline, Diana Award or some other service and get the help you need. You should be proud of the person you are and you have nothing to be ashamed of.”
Nominees are selected for using their fame to positively affect the community, and advancing LGBTQ+ rights as a matter of equality and inclusion. Others on the list include James Corden, JK Rowling, Ariana Grande, Emma Watson, Anne Hathaway and Patrick Stewart. Queen’s Brian May won in 2016.
Awards are also up for grabs in the categories of LGBT friendly destinations, LGBT broadcaster/journalist and brand or marketing campaign, amongst others.
The Awards ceremony will take place at the Grand Connaught Rooms, London, on 12th May
You can cast your vote for one of the nominees, including Prince William, here, before 22nd March.
