It has just been announced – after much speculation this week – that Prince Harry has proposed to Meghan Markle and they are engaged.
The statement from Clarence House said the couple were in fact, engaged earlier this month, meaning the speculation about the couple was correct. It was believed that Meghan, actress in legal drama ‘Suits’ finished the series earlier this month, and there have been reports of her packing her house up and moving to London.
Bookmakers also suspended betting on another royal wedding late last week, fuelling speculation.
Prince Harry did the traditional thing and asked Meghan’s parents for their permission to marry their daughter, and they gave their blessing.
They also commented, via a Kensington Palace statement: “We are incredibly happy for Meghan and Harry. Our daughter has always been a kind and loving person. To see her union with Harry, who shares the same qualities, is a source of great joy for us as parents.
“We wish them a lifetime of happiness and are very excited for their future together.”
Of course, The Queen and other senior members of the Royal Family have been informed; Prince Harry would have had to ask The Queen’s permission to marry, as the 5th in line to the throne.
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have also said: “We are very excited for Harry and Meghan. It has been wonderful getting to know Meghan and to see how happy she and Harry are together.”
A tweet from Buckingham Palace said The Queen and Prince Philip ‘are delighted for the couple and wish them every happiness.’
Harry and Meghan, 33 and 35, will appear for an engagement photocall later this afternoon.
The palace also says that Harry and Meghan will live at Nottingham Cottage in the grounds of Kensington Palace, Harry’s current home. They will have their wedding in the coming Spring, but no other details have been released.
It was clear that the short relationship was serious after the actress appeared in public to watch Prince Harry play polo in the summer, and the joined him at the Invictus Games in Toronto in September, walking hand-in-hand.
Congratulations to Harry and Meghan. What do you think of the news?
