Charles gives away bride as international Royals gather for society wedding

Prince Charles gave away his friend’s daughter at her wedding today. The Queen, Prince Philip and a number of other Royals, including Queen Sofia of Spain, also attended the nuptials of Alexandra Knatchbull and Thomas Hooper.

The wedding took place at Romsey Abbey, Hampshire, with The Prince of Wales walking the soon-to-be Mrs Hooper down the aisle to her fiance. Lord Brabourne, the bride’s father, was in attendance with his wife, but sat in the congregation due to health issues.

Alexandra is the granddaughter of 92-year-old Countess Mountbatten, Patricia Knatchbull, the daughter of Earl Mountbatten, The Duke of Edinburgh’s uncle. Her father, Norton Knatchbull, is a close friend of Charles’, having had The Prince of Wales as his best man.

The Royal connections, however, do not end there: Lord Brabourne is the godson of Prince Philip’s and Nicholas, Brabourne’s son was a mentor to Prince William when the two were at Eton.

Diana, Princess of Wales was a godmother to the bride, who wore a cream satin gown, simple in its design, while the groom wore a vibrant blue waistcoat for the occasion. Alexandra works as a forensic accountant and Thomas as an entrepreneur.

The families gathered to celebrate the couple at Romsey Abbey, with a host of Royal and aristocratic guests: Princess Anne joined her parents, and Princess Alexandra made an appearance too.

Her Majesty was not the only Monarch in attendance – Queen Sofia of Spain, whose husband abdicated in 2014, and exiled King Constantine II and his wife Queen Anne-Marie were amongst the guests, as well as Prince Hassan bin Talal of Jordan and his wife Princess Sarvath al-Hassan.

The event must have brought back a number of many memories for The Queen and Philip, as the wedding breakfast was held at Broadlands, the place of The Queen and Duke’s 1947 honeymoon. It was also at the Abbey that the press became aware of Elizabeth and Philip’s courtship, as he greeted the Princess and her sister, Margaret, at the church door.
